KIWI - biolab

Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge-based and Integrated Systems for Biological Laboratories

The aim of the international future laboratory KIWI-biolab: The KIWI-biolab will enable a fully autonomous biolab for bioprocess development through research in the fields of AI, ML and automation. An important basis is the leading role of Germany in automated high-throughput bioprocess development. This leading role will be further expanded by attracting excellent scientists to work on the development of new digital solutions for the autonomous planning of experiments, the monitoring and control of robotic systems, the analysis and evaluation of the data generated and the optimization of bioprocesses. The KIWI-biolab will close the large gap in research, development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools for biotechnology and biomanufacturing. To this end, the main objectives of the KIWI-biolab are

  • To build up an international group of excellent scientists in AI for sustainable biotechnological applications
  • Creation and development of new instruments to promote the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly production processes
  • Keeping Germany at the forefront of autonomous operation of parallel cultivation robots
  • Expansion of an international network for long-term operation of the KIWI-biolab
